Today, I figured something important out. I am known for rejecting feel good books like on how to be prosperous, or have healing, or things like the purpose-driven life in the christian department. I always said they are more close to heresy (not in, warrens case that's more like misrepresantation) due to the have what you want theology of self fulfillment. Teachers like Kenneth Copeland and Joel Osteen are good examples of this
Alas it is written that whoever searches for Christ must die to himself not fulfill his own desires. Of course the "you can have whatever you say and sucess" theology is not biblically correct, we can learn something of importance about the state of Western christtianity. It appeals more to modern culture as we are concerned about having the best and most of everything, to feel good about the way "we are". When listening to these teachings I feel no different then listening to secular views on how people are to live and what they want to acheive. While I gave my evidence in other places of how this is wrong, I believe it needs a deeper understanding in terms of true discipleship. When we think of the cruxification, we commonly think of the pain suffered on the cross. WE are missing the point though, the point is the shame of the cross.Hebrews 12:2 says:

Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

This shame symbols a loss of power when Jesus was being mocked and spitted on. This contrasts with hell as it is not a plae of physical torture but a place of shame. Daniel 12:2 speaks not of everlasting pain, but of disgrace and everlasting contempt. The "weeping and gnashing of teeth" associated with punishment verses "describes a reaction of persons who have been publicly shamed or dishonored". This contrasts with our point that bringing people to Christ in terms of self-fulfillment is flawed due to that we come to christ in terms of self-denial, and the shame we feel brought on by our sins, which is why when hell is expalained it is said with the most shame. When Jesus bore our shame on the cross we either or accept or reject that he took are shame away and admit our dependance on him for the correct way. For the people that reject they are basically choosing the shame that goes with there lifestyles of serving their own interests, and there deeds accordincly. By denying they put themselves outside the proper place for humanity belingning where it makes sense. A state of shame.
The point of this? well it shows that when we follow the Bible to acheive our own desires we ignore the shame accompanying it and how we are supposed to deny self. We therefore, understand better why the western christnaity is falling short to it's own desires
